App of the Week – Sara’s Cooking Class

I have often bemoaned the fact that there are not enough video games for girls. As a mother of 13-year-old tech savvy girl, I would love to have more choices than puzzle or dancing games.

So I was thrilled to hear about the recent launch of the tween gaming app “Sara’s Cooking Class” from GirlsgoGames, an online social-gaming platform tailored to girls with 50 million monthly active users worldwide. Based on the popular desktop game of the same name, the app encourages tween girls to “cook” different recipes with the help of a friendly cartoon chef named Sara.

The app aims to inspire young girls to learn more about recipes and cook creatively for themselves in real life, rather than relying on processed and packaged food. “Sara’s Cooking Class” is a fun, educational gaming experience for kids and parents, and we have greatly enjoyed playing it this past weekend!

One of our favorite features is how it encourages players to learn to cook for themselves through role-play. It provides an environment in which they can experiment with a wide range of recipes from across the globe. Choosing from a diverse recipe book, including the likes of sushi, homemade pizza and red velvet cake, players then follow simple steps from Sara to complete their meal. They earn points as they progress through the recipes successfully, competing against a kitchen timer. At the end of each level, points are added together and Sara awards stars as prizes.

We have yet to make the final product in the real kitchen at home but it’s exciting to see girls (and boys too) excited about applying their creativity to this wonderfully therapeutic activity.

The app launches both as a lite (free) version, as well as a full, premium version with additional features. It is available in the iTunes App Store for iOS devices and Google Play and the Amazon Appstore for Android devices.
