The Online Mom Blog - Consumers get smart about data

This week there has been quite a bit of chatter about a mobile satisfaction survey conducted by ForeSee, an analytics company that focuses on digital media. The survey looked at 22 different news, sports, and entertainment web sites and apps and collected opinions from over 5,500 users.

Although the ForeSee report takes great pains to distinguish between the sites based on their various customer satisfaction scores, there appears to be very little to choose between them. I’m no statistician but if iTunes scores a high of 80 in the Streaming Movie and TV category and HuluPlus scores a low of 75, there’s probably not a whole lot of difference once you factor in the margin for error.

Just Say No Mo' to FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) and Take a Social Media Break

By Stacey Ross

Do you suffer from FOMO – The Fear of Missing Out? A new study from Harris Interactive on behalf of MyLife.com shows that 56 percent of social media users say they suffer from a fear of missing out based on what they see on social networks. Interestingly, the same study says that 52 percent of people say that they have taken or want to take a vacation from social media!

More than 2,000 adults age 18 and over participated in the study, with each person belonging to more than one social networking site and having at least one email address. The survey describes FOMO as "a relatively new concept where people are concerned that others may be having more fun and rewarding experiences than them. It is characterized as the desire to stay continually connected with what others are doing."

Taking Your TV With You

The recent launch of the Verizon FiOS Mobile app for Android devices (it was already available for the iPad) has completed a much-awaited transition in our household: every family member can now watch live TV anywhere in the house!

Like many modern households, my family has settled on a rather complicated tech eco-system. While I love all things Apple – I have a Mac, an iPad, and an iPhone – my husband is a big Android fan, owning both a Samsung Galaxy S4 smartphone and a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 tablet. Our two kids share a Wi-Fi-only iPad 2 but are pretty agnostic when it comes to operating systems and will happily grab whatever tablet happens to be lying around.

The Samsung Galaxy S4: What are you waiting for?!

By Conrad Meyer

Well, you've certainly seen the advertisements and you've probably read some of the reviews. (And you've been witnessing the tarnishing of the Apple star.) And you are still putting off getting the Samsung Galaxy S4 until you are sure it’s the best thing.

Of course most of the reviews of the S4 have told you about breathtaking new features like eye scrolling, hand waving, and telepathic directions, but what do you need all that stuff for? And accompanying the description of all those features are the notes that tell you some of those features are glitchy and don't quite deliver on everything they promise.

So why should you upgrade to the S4? Here are a few reasons:

The Best Free Apps for Shopping

By Tracey Dowdy

I love a good deal as much as the next shopper. I check the weekly flyers before I grocery shop and do my homework when making larger purchases like my recent search for patio furniture. There are a multitude of shopping apps out there, some more effective than others and sorting through them can be as overwhelming and confusing as making the purchase itself.

Here are my favorites, designed to take some of the stress out of finding the best deals in store and online:
