The case for a smartphone case

3/6/2013 2:54:00 PM

There was a time when I didn’t think much of smartphone cases. Why would you spend a couple of hundred dollars on a shiny new smartphone and then spend even more to make it look like a toy? Besides, weren’t smartphone cases just for tweens and the chronically clumsy?

And then I dropped my phone.

If you are one of the many people who have suffered a cracked screen or have seen your phone fly apart, scattering pieces in all directions, then you have probably come around to my way of thinking, which is that smartphone cases are really not so bad after all. In fact, a smartphone case can be a great investment, combining a sensible safety-first approach with a little fashionable flair.

There are various ways to go about looking for a smartphone case. The first is to narrow down your selection, which is really done for you when you choose your make and model of phone. Buy an iPhone or a Samsung Galaxy S III and you will find yourself with lots of custom choices. Buy a less popular phone and you might find you are restricted to more generic cases.

But generic cases will still protect your phone and they can still look great. There is usually a large choice of colors for every style and most of them are very affordable. If you are doing a little in-store shopping, be sure to ask the salesperson to show you how to put the case on and take it off, and see how you like the look. If you spend as much time with your smartphone as I do, you want to make sure that the cover is something you can live with almost 24 hours a day!

Another thing to consider is whether a case can enhance the functionality of your device. Some cases come with a kickstand, which is great if you use your smartphone for reading or watching movies. Others have wallet-style pockets, which allow you to store credit cards, receipts and other handy items.

Once you find a case you like, shop around to make sure you get the best price. I’ve seen the exact same Kate Spade smartphone case priced at $55 and $25, depending on the store.

If you want great value, Verizon offers dozens of hard-wearing and cool-looking cases, including brand name covers from Otterbox and Belkin, and designer covers from Juicy Couture, Vera Bradley and more. A smartphone case may be sensible but that doesn’t mean it can’t come with a little style!

The Online Mom LLC receives a fee for participating in certain promotional campaign for Verizon Wireless. All opinions are my own.
